COBA

Cobá is an archaeological site of the pre-Columbian Maya culture, located in southeastern Mexico, in the territory that today comprises the state of Quintana Roo, about ninety kilometers east of Chichén Itzá and about forty kilometers northwest of Tulum. The possible meaning of Cobá could be from cob 'that which has moisture' or moss and á or há 'water', that is, 'water with moss' or 'moisture of water'. Another possibility, which is not ruled out, is that it means 'turbid water', due to the proximity of some small lakes with a very turbid color.

Other researchers from the National Institute of Anthropology and History, however, offer slightly different translations of the term Cobá, among which we can mention 'water of the chachalacas', since cob is the name of that bird of the region; 'tooth of the gopher', also from the Mayan coh 'tooth' and bah 'gopher'; or 'abundant water' from cob 'abundance' and 'ha' water, that can already be a reason to visit it and find out with one of its inhabitants.
