SIAN KA'AN

With its unique ecosystem, Sian Ka'an is home to plant formations almost unlike any other in the world, called petenes. These are masses of trees that can reach up to thirty meters in height and rise from the marsh grasses. Outside the Yucatán Peninsula, they exist only in the US state of Florida, where they are known as hammocks, and in Cuba, where they are called cayos de monte. They are mostly oval or circular in shape and range in size from a few tens of meters to almost two kilometers in diameter.
These areas are formed by the presence of freshwater springs that emerge from the brackish marshes, allowing large trees to grow. In addition to its flora, this place is home to various exotic animals during their seasons, such as leopards, pumas, frigatebirds, pelicans, dolphins, and turtles. What's impressive is that they are found in their natural habitat, as this area is protected by the authorities of our country.
